Northern Ireland get behind Olympic Skater
Northern Ireland’s Winter Olympian Jenna McCorkell is recuperating in Belgium after a hectic few days following the European Championships. After collecting her Olympic ‘kit’ in London she returned to Belgium for some well deserved rest and recuperation before she will head onto the ice again for more intense training prior to the big event – The Olympic Games in Vancouver.
With only 17 days and counting until the Opening Ceremony Jenna will become the first ever skater from Northern Ireland to compete in the Games: ‘Jenna is in a good place right now and has prepared to the best of her ability, she as always, will do her country proud – I am convinced of it’ commented Karin McBride her PR. ‘She always gives it her all, I am sure Northern Ireland will get right behind her!’
It is a far cry from the days whenever Jenna first took to the ice in Coleraine’s Jet Centre. Whenever it closed she trained for a few years in Dundonald Ice Bowl before moving to Coventry, England to train with Yuri Bureiko at the International School of Skating. From there over the years, and her new training in Belgium, she has won the British Senior Ladies title no less than a record seven times, placed top 10 Europeans two years running, placed in the top 20 of the World and has now qualified for the Olympic Games. Jenna skates lifetime best
Seven times British Ice Skating Champion Jenna McCorkell skated a blinder in
Estonia at the European Championships today to score a lifetime best in the
short programme. However, things had been in doubt as to whether or not
McCorkell would even compete.
"Up until the last minute Jenna had to consult with the doctor as she had
suffered a viral relapse just prior to the event , but she is a very gutsy young woman and was determined to do her best, which I am delighted to say she did", stated Karin McBride who has been Jenna’s PR for 10 years.
With the standard this year at its highest ever and with very little separating the
top ten skaters, there is all to skate for in the free programme tomorrow.
This year the European’s is acting as a ‘warm-up’ to the Olympic Games in a
month’s time whenever Jenna will again compete.
