Redhog Wrestling Award Winning Athletes

Redhog Wrestling Club opened at Chum Sut Martial Arts and Fitness Centre,

Lisburn in August 2008 and to accommodate growing demand from under 16s

the Redhog Juniors Club was introduced in February 2009.

Our club is young and already our athletes have achieved so much, several

debuted at the NI Open in April 09 winning Bronze medals, others achieved

podium status at British, Irish, European and international competitions and

the talent shown from a number of our wrestlers has secured positions within

the junior and senior Northern Ireland Squad. The route to the

Commonwealth Games 2010 is on track for Matt Campbell and Mark

Montgomery, Redhog Wrestling Club’s senior contenders. Top Results are rolling

in and consecutive successes are the emerging pattern for Redhog Wrestlers.

Within a short time, several athletes have enhanced their performance

whilst training at Redhog Wrestling Club, Andrew Purssell just 12 years

old, supported by the Mary Peters Trust gained a silver medal at the

British Championships, Gold at the Wigan and Leigh Championships and is the

current Welsh Open Champion. Ranked number one in Northern Ireland, the future

is bright for Andrew, certain to make an impact on the GB Junior Team.

Cameron Burns, Irish Champion on several occasions placed 1st winning Gold at

the 13th Tryst Open in Scotland on Saturday 12 September another success to

add to the Redhog medallist Collection.

Sammy Tufts, supported by Sport Northern Ireland, is an athlete at the top of

the Junior Field, attending international tournaments, winning podium positions

and securing a place on the GB Junior Team, a potential for the 2014

Commonwealth games in Glasgow.

O2 It’s Your Community recently supported Redhog Wrestling Club with a donation

of £600 to help purchase a full size Olympic style wrestling surface, an

essential wrestling training aid and Tom Lamont of Chum Sut Martial Arts and

Fitness Centre also donated £200, the remaining funds of £400 were raised

through the club’s very successful 5 hour sponsored Wrestlathon on Sunday

13 September.

Thanks to Lisburn Sport, a number of our athletes have been awarded free use

of the sports facilities within Lisburn and have supported Redhog Wrestling Club

from its launch. The success of Redhog Wrestling Club is attributable to

teamwork and with the current calibre of athletes the future is looking good,

says Coach O’Rawe.

Responding to feedback from Lisburn’s sporting community; John O’Rawe

National Coach NI intends to launch an 'all female' and 'Mini' [Under 8s] sessions

at the club in the near future. It’s wonderful to see so many people, particularly

kids and teens walking in to the club eager to learn an Olympic Sport. Mini

Wrestling is taking off in Northern Ireland and Redhogs do not want to miss

the opportunity to create more Mark Montgomery’s, Sammy Tufts’ etc...
